Peeling, Cracked or Blistered Paint

One of the problems you are most likely to come across is that of paint which is peeling, cracked or blistered. there can be many reasons for this - poor preparation, damp, paint applied over a surface which is not completely dry etc.

Most problems are simply fixed if you take a little time and effort. Some examples I have come across are below...

Sometimes ceilings particularly are in bad condition. They can have cracks, peeling paint, stains or mould (usually in bathrooms and shower areas which are poorly ventilated).

It was repaired as follows:

Step 1.     The peeling paint was cut, scraped and sanded back to a sound surface.

Step 2.     PVA adhesive was applied all over and allowed to dry. If necessary eg.
where the surface is left uneven, apply acrylic filler and spread smooth
(See “Oh No!” in the Ceilings chapter). Prime the affected area with a
primer/sealer. Allow to dry and paint as normal.

Step 3.  The affected area was painted with Zinsser Bullseye 1-2-3 Primer / Sealer
            and allowed to dry thoroughly

Step 4.  Two coats of a water-based eggshell emulsion were applied and this is the
            final result!

PS. 4 years on, even with use several times a day, it's still perfect!
